5 secrets for New Year Resolution Success – ESL Vocabulary

What Are New Year Resolutions?

Many of us see the New Year as an opportunity to make a fresh start, to give up a bad habit or to take up a good one. When we decide to take up a good habit like eating healthy or give up a bad one like binge eating, we are actually making resolutions which are promises to self and no one else.

Now I’m going to with you some tips for making and following New Year resolutions:

Does Self-Denial Work?

Self-denialis to not allow yourself to do/ have what you want. Does it really work? Umm…the good news is not for food! After Christmas, we are keen on making New Year resolutions about losing weight, particularly when many of us have overindulgedwhich means we have eaten and drunk too much, just like me.
But if you have low self-restraint which is the ability to control ourselves, You don’t need to feel guilty because evidence increasingly shows that weight loss diets have no scientific basis, so all that self-denial is actually a waste of effort. Eat what you prefer. Cheers to science!

How To Stick To Resolutions?

So all of us actually make resolutions but how many actually stick to it? When you stick to something, you continue doing, using, saying, or talking about it, rather than changing to something else. For example, perhaps I should stick to my current job, it’s a great bargain.

So the best way to stick to resolutions is to set realistic goals by deciding on things you can really achieve. For example: If you’re trying to lose weight, you might never run a marathon, but you could probably manage a brisk walk around the park most days. You may not be able to give up sugar completely, but perhaps you could cut down on fizzy drinks.

Set One Resolution At A Time

According to Psychologists, each person only has limited willpower, this is the ability to control oneself. For example, it took every ounce of my willpower to change my eating habits. Since we all have limited willpower, it’s best to make one resolution at a time. If you try to say no to too many of the things you love, you will never succeed.
For example, If you decide to quit smoking, lose weight, become an extrovert at the same time, you’re going to fail in all because you have limited will power. Focus all your energies on one of these and once you have achieved one of them, target the next resolution.
So don’t deny yourself more than one thing at a time.

We Need Determination

Are you weak-willed?This is a person without self-control. Don’t worry, after all, nobody is perfect.
Is it hard for you to resist those cream cakes? Do you get tempted when you see other people smoking? If you do give in to temptation from time to time then overcome it with determination. Temptation means to allow yourself to have what you want. For example: the desire to smoke when you see someone else smoking. On the other hand, determination is the mental effort to not give up.
But when you train your mind to think of the ill effects of smoking and then avoid it, that’s called determination, which means to not give in on the temptation.
An example of determination is the strength to keep applying for jobs after being turned down by dozens of potential employers

We All Need Motivation

Finally, the last point, we all need motivation. But what is motivation? Motivation is the encouragement required to do something difficult. For example, if you know that a healthy diet will give you a fit body you are more likely to eat healthy. So here a fit body is the motivation for eating healthy.

Therefore if we know that our good behavior will be rewarded, we are more likely to stay on the straight and narrow i.e. do what we should do.
Happy New Year resolutions making to all of you. I’m sure most of you won’t remember half of your New Year resolutions by the end of 2017.
