Miff – English Vocabulary Lesson # 123

Sometimes, you may be put off by someone or something. At that moment, you are out of mood and just don’t want to listen to anyone. The word ‘miff’ basically means to annoy someone or to get annoyed by someone or something.

Sometimes, people may make a remark at you, it doesn’t go down too well with you, leaving you feeling quite offended. So, the person has miffed you with whatever he said. When someone does something mean that makes you feel very bad, you are put off by the entire episode. That’s because you are miffed. For example, if your colleague at work, keeps taunting you or picks on you for every little thing, you feel put off by his behavior. It means you are miffed.

The word ‘miff’ is a verb in the present form. Its past and participle form is ‘miffed’. ‘Miffed’ is an adjective that describes someone of being annoyed.

Example 01: Brian miffed his colleague by submitting incomplete reports.

Example 02: Christine was miffed when her mother criticized her colored hair.

Example 03: Patricia was miffed when she saw John with another girl.

Example 04: Harry was miffed as his wife had spent all his money on her excessive shopping.

Example 05: The entire team was miffed with Daniel due to his poor performance in the match.

Example 06: Despite being apologetic, his doctor was miffed with Victor, as he didn’t complete his medication properly.

Example 07: Miffed Michelle refused to listen to her mother’s explanation for not taking her to the amusement park.

Example 08: Samantha was a little miffed as the dress she liked didn’t fit her well.
