Binomial word pairs with conjunction ‘AND’

English is definitely a fun language to learn. As an English learner we tend to learn a lot of expressions which are useful for our conversations. Certain expressions are known as Binomial pairs. A binomial pair is an expression containing two words which are joined by a conjunction (usually and or or). The word order of a binomial pair is usually fixed. In this English lesson today today you will learn six commonly used binomial pairs, using the conjunction ‘and’.

1. Sick and tired –

to be angry and annoyed because something unpleasant has been happening for too long.
Example – I am sick and tired of my neighbours playing loud music every night.

2. Neat and tidy –

Someone or something which is clean and organized.
Example – Your closet is so neat and tidy.

3. Short and sweet –

Not too long , something which is brief and pleasant
Example – We don’t have much time so please keep your remarks short and sweet.

4. Odds and ends –

a group of small objects of different types which are not very valuable or important
Example – I need to get my drawers cleaned there are too many odd and ends lying in there.

5. Loud and clear –

Something that is said in a way that can be easily understood
Example – I hear you loud and clear

6. By and large –

On the whole or something in general
Example – There are few things I don’t really like about my company, but by and large it is a good job.

There are many more binomial pairs using the conjunction ‘and’, so start using them in your conversation.
